Participants CHT Traditional Institutions and Leaders, Elected Representatives, Local Administration, Community Members, Students and Youth, Legal Professionals, Headman & Karbari Associations, Cultural Activists, Village Police, Circle Chief Offices, DC & DD-LG, NGOs, Hill District Councils (HDCs), CHT Regional Council (CHTRC), Judiciary, and relevant Ministries (MoLGRD&C, MoCHTA, MoLJPA).
Project Purpose / Objectives
  • Overall Objective: To contribute to improving access to justice for disadvantaged and marginalized groups in Bangladesh.
  • Specific Objectives:
    1. To make local authorities more responsive to local justice needs and enable well-functioning village courts and traditional justice mechanisms in CHT.
    2. To empower local people, especially women, the poor, and vulnerable groups to seek remedies for injustices and resolve disputes locally in a transparent and affordable manner.
Outputs / Activity Results
  • Strengthened capacity of stakeholders at national and local levels to enable effective village courts in CHT.
  • Revised legal and policy frameworks to improve village court efficiency
  • Enhanced government monitoring capacity for evaluating village court performance.
  • Increased public awareness and accessibility of village court services.
  • Improved evidence-based knowledge and documentation of local justice mechanisms.
Major Activities
  1. Strengthening traditional institutions, CSOs, and local administration capacities in CHT.
  2. Capacity development for elected representatives on customary law and justice mechanisms.
  3. Advocating for monitoring systems through Circle Chief offices.
  4. Conducting awareness programs on legal systems and redress mechanisms.
  5. Implementing independent evaluations and needs-based assessments.
  6. Enhancing documentation, reporting, and action research on village courts in CHT.
  7. Supporting exploration and scoping studies for village court operations.
