Chittagong Hill Tracts Rural Development Project (CHTRDP-I)

Trinamul Unnayan Sangstha (TUS) implemented the Chittagong Hill Tracts Rural Development Project (CHTRDP-I) from July 2005 to June 2009, covering 17 unions across 5 Upazilas of Khagrachari Hill District:

  • Golabari, Kamalchari, and Perachara in Khagrachari Sadar Upazila;
  • Diginala, Merung, and Boalkhali in Diginala Upazila;
  • Logang, Chengi, and Latiban in Panchari Upazila;
  • Laxmichari, Dullayachari, and Barmachari in Laxmichari Upazila; and
  • Tabolchari, Taindong, Belchari, Barnal, and Gomti in Matiranga Upazila. 

Key activities included:

  • community selection,
  • participatory planning,
  • village mapping,
  • profiling,
  • feasibility studies, and
  • forming community organizations such as Community Development Committees (CDCs) and O&M orientations.

TUS implemented 355 sub-projects with a total expenditure of BDT 71,745,760 focusing on both community social infrastructure (education centers, safe drinking water, sanitation) and economic infrastructure (irrigation, solar panels, agricultural equipment). 
Through this project, TUS developed significant experience in community infrastructure, watershed management, sustainable livelihood, and market linkages — strengthening its role as a key player in sustainable development within the CHT region.

Project Purpose
  • ‘To reduce the incidence of absolute poverty amongst rural communities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.’
  •  CHTRDP supported marginal farmers and others struggling to meet their basic needs,
  • such as landless households, jhum cultivators, and daily wage laborers, 
  • by providing access to improved infrastructure and livelihood opportunities.
