Livelihood and Micro Grants Management Support Project (LMGMP)

Trinamul Unnayan Sangstha (TUS) implemented the Livelihood and Micro Grants Management Support Project (LMGMP) under the Chittagong Hill Tracts Watershed Co-Management Activity (CHTWCA), supported by UNDP and funded by USAID, from January 1 to December 31, 2016. The project was implemented across six upazilas of Khagrachari Hill DistrictKhagrachari Sadar, Panchari, Mohalchari, Matiranga, Laxmichari, and Ramgarh — with the objective of improving the livelihoods of forest-dependent and economically vulnerable households in the Mong Circle areas.

The project focused on several key interventions. Under small-scale livelihood development, TUS carried out beneficiary selection, formation of livelihood subgroups, skill development training for farmers and livelihood thematic groups, and provided livelihood development grant support. To enhance access to safe water, the organization selected feasible communities, established Water Facility Management Committees, and installed water facility schemes to ensure sustainable water access.

Through the emergency support component, TUS developed rules and guidelines for emergency response and provided emergency assistance to affected VCF (Village Common Forest) communities. The project also facilitated the implementation of VCF development plans, which included selecting target VCFs, engaging livelihood volunteers, organizing regular PDC (Para Development Committee) and VCF meetings, and monitoring prioritized development activities.

The project worked with 1,053 households from 23 communities across 8 VCFs, focusing on 382 highly vulnerable households (36%), with particular emphasis on women’s empowerment. Most of these households were forest-dependent and food-insecure, facing livelihood challenges for at least one quarter of the year. The initiative supported Chakma, Marma, and Tripura communities, promoting sustainable income opportunities, improved forest management, and stronger community resilience.
